Why I recorded the controversial leaked tape which captured a plot to remove IGP Dampare from office – Bugri Naabu

In order to defend his party, Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said that he was on the infamous tape that was leaked and exposed a scheme to have Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police, removed.

In addition, he said that given the gravity of the problems raised with the three senior police officers, he wanted to have adequate proof to present to President Akufo-Addo.

“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something…and it is either I don’t go to tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it and if I also go to talk to the President, it is good to tell him the right thing and since I cannot keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record, and I know the President, [if] I go and tell him something, and it turns not to be true, next time he won’t give me respect,” he said.

This was said by Mr. Naabu when he testified on Monday before the parliamentary committee looking into the recording leak.

He also admitted that he didn’t capture the talk on the leaked audio himself but rather hired someone to do it.

“I didn’t do it myself but I requested somebody who knows how to do the recording to come and do it for me. I didn’t use a phone I went to the mall and got this ordinary tape,” he stated.

Because the topics being addressed were so important, Mr. Naabu indicated that he had to film the conversation with the three senior police officers in order to have documentation to show the president.

He went on to name the three police officials as Superintendent Gyebi, COP Mensah, and Commander Asare.

Additionally, Bugri Naabu said that the discussion had taken place in his office, which is located in Osu next to the Osu Police Station.

His narrative states that the three top officials approached him with the intention of pushing for the IGP’s dismissal. The officers’ explanation for this request was because Dr. Akuffo Damapre’s actions were thought to more closely match with the objectives of the opposition NDC, thereby jeopardizing the prospects of the governing party winning the impending 2024 elections.
