ECG disconnects Accra Sports stadium over unpaid debt

The Accra Sports Stadium’s connection to the national power system has been severed as a result of unpaid electricity bills.

A small power generator provided electricity to a few offices during a visit on Tuesday, but the entire building was without power.

The stadium has been disconnected before. This is not the first instance.

A few officials, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed worry about the ongoing disconnections brought about by insufficient funding.

The ECG’s Head of Prosecution, Paul Abariga, clarified in a Citi News interview that the continuous disconnections are a component of the company’s efforts to increase income.

“The signal is going down well, and people are now understanding that there will be no intervention for non-payment of bills. The exercise we are undertaking is a reminder that you need to pay, and we don’t disconnect everyone. We arrange and plan a payment schedule with customers.”

Accra Academy was also shut down for failing to pay a GH¢400,000 outstanding debt.

He defended the choice to cut off the electricity in order to force unwilling establishments to make their bill payments.
