Chinese Inmate At Nsawam Prison Escapes While Receiving Medical Care At Korle Bu Hospital

A prisoner at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, who is reportedly a Chinese national, fled while seeking medical attention.

Wang Xiao was a prisoner at Nsawam Prison receiving a one-year sentence for theft.

It is reported that he complained of illness and required dental care outside of the institution.

He was led to Accra’s Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

However, it is said that during his medical treatment, he managed to get away from the jail guards who had accompanied him to the hospital.

The event took place on February 7, 2024, a Wednesday. The incident has been confirmed by the Ghana Prisons Service.

The Ghana Prisons Service’s Head of Media Relations, DSP Irene Pokuah Wiredu, confirmed the occurrence to Graphic Online and stated that the agency has since released a wanted person notice asking for assistance from the public in re-arresting the prisoner.

The prisoner was taken to Korle Bu to receive dental care.

According to Graphic Online, the prisoner was detained in Tema, went through a thievery trial in court, and was sentenced to one year in prison, which he was serving at Nsawam Prison.

According to reports, the prisoner is on trial for a different offense that is very significant.

All of the involved officers are being questioned as part of ongoing investigations.
