Cement prices now GH¢108

Cement prices are still rising in spite of a ministerial directive to the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee in Ghana (CMDCG), which is causing chaos in the real estate sector and driving up rent costs in Accra.

Many purchasers are confused by the large price increase from last week to this week, according to price checks.

Cement prices in May 2024 varied from GH¢85 to GH¢90, based on the brand and ratio. According to traders who spoke with GBC Ghana Online in Pokuase, prices had skyrocketed to about GH¢110 as of June 4, 2024.

According to one dealer, the current prices are as follows: Ghacem (42R) is leading the market at GH¢110, Cimaf (42R) is GH¢107, Dzata cement (42R) is currently GH¢108, and Cimaf (32R) is GH¢87.

According to other sources, Dangote is between GH¢92 and GH¢94, while Diamond Cement is between GH¢75 and GH¢85.

In an effort to relieve the strain on Ghanaians, Minister of Trade and Industry Kobina Tahir Hammond recently demanded an immediate halt to these pricing increases.

But it seems like this order was disregarded, maybe because the underlying reasons for the increases were disregarded.

The Ministry asked the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee (CMDC) to guarantee consistent cement pricing across the country by enforcing the price reversal without fail in a statement released on May 15.

The Ghana Standards Authority (Manufacture of Cement) Regulations, 2023 (LI 2480) established the CMDC, which is in charge of policing cement manufacture and advancing its wholesale and retail markets.

Cement producers, the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), the Ghana Institution of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI), and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation are among the organizations represented on the Committee.
