A Roman Catholic priest in Kenya has made the rare decision to wed.
Priests are expected to dedicate themselves to a life of celibacy in the Catholic tradition, however Reverend Father Edwin Gathang’i Waiguru has recently joined the Catholic Charismatic religion.
The marriage ceremony was officiated by Bishop Patrick Mulau of the Kirinyaga Charismatic Church on Sunday in Kiambu country, near Nairobi’s center.
Standing next to his bride, Margaret Wanjira Githui, Father Waiguru said “It is possible to serve God and have a family and have a lovely wife”.
“God did not make a mistake when he created a man and a woman and He said it is not good for somebody to be alone.”
After being assigned to preach in North and South America, Father Waiguru claimed he felt the desire to wed and start a family.
He made the decision to get married in a traditional ceremony when he got back to Kenya. Two children were a blessing for the couple.
He performed both his marriage ceremony and another ordination as a Charismatic priest. Now, he claimed, he can declare that he has fulfilled his calling as a priest.
“I am very happy. To my wife, I promise to love you always,” he said.
Hundreds of the couple’s family and friends went to witness the unusual ceremony, NTV reports.
