CAF Increases AFCON Prize Money By 40 Per cent

A 40% rise in prize money has been announced by the Confederation African Football (CAF) for the victor of the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will take place in Côte d’Ivoire from January 13 to February 11.

In contrast to Senegal’s $5 million prize in 2021, the champion of the TotalEnergies AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 would receive $7 million.

The winner will now get $4 million, the two semi-finalists, $2.5 million each, and the four quarter-finalists, $1.3 million each.

This was declared by CAF on Thursday, January 4, 2024.

The winning team’s monetary award was raised by CAF from $4.5 million to $5 million in 2021, while the second-place team took home $2.75 million. Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties in the championship match to win the tournament for the first time.

According to CAF, there would be a substantial rise in prize money, which will boost the stakes and intensify competition, making the 2023 AFCON even more exciting for players.

The President of CAF, Dr Patrice Motsepe said: “CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions. We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to 7 000 000 which is a 40 per cent increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money.”

“I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations,” he added.
