Major Kwadwo Boakye Gyan, a retired military officer, has been reported dead.
He died on Wednesday, August 30th, following a brief illness.
Major (rtd) Boakye Gyan is most remembered for leading the 1979 revolt that resulted in the overthrow of the Supreme Military Council (SMC II) dictatorship.
He oversaw the release of then-junior officer Jerry John Rawlings from detention as a prominent member of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC).
Major (rtd) Boakye-Gyan fled to exile under the Rawlings dictatorship and returned to Ghana only during the presidency of John Agyekum Kufuor.
