Julian Nagelsmann will leave RB Leipzig at the end of the current season to replace Hansi Flick as Bayern Munich’s head coach.
RB Leipzig confirmed on Tuesday that Nagelsmann, 33, would leave the Red Bull Arena after two seasons in charge. He has signed a five-year-contract with the reigning Bundesliga champions.
Nagelsmann had previously been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.
What has been said?
In a statement Bayern said: “FC Bayern have appointed Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach.
“The Bavarian-born 33-year-old will move to Munich from RB Leipzig on 1 July 2021 ahead of the new season, signing a five-year-contract with the German record champions until 30 June 2026.
“This comes after FC Bayern agreed to current head coach Hansi Flick’s request to have his contract terminated on 30 June 2021, two years earlier than its original expiry date.”
What has Nagelsmann achieved as a manager?
He became the youngest ever Bundesliga manager when he took charge of Hoffenheim in 2015 as a 28-year-old.
Initially he led them to safety before taking them to fourth place in his first full season.
Nagelsmann joined Leipzig in June 2019, before guiding them to the Champions League semi-finals that season.
His Leipzig side are currently second in Germany’s top flight, seven points behind Bayern.
What is happening with Flick?
Earlier this month, Flick said he had told Bayern he wants to leave at the end of the season.
He said: “I told the team today that I informed the club during the week after the game in Paris that I would like to get out of my contract at the end of the season.”
How have Bayern performed this season?
They are top of the Bundesliga and look likely to win the title again.
However, they were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by PSG.
