Bawumia pledges to abolish Emission Levy and Tax On Bets when elected as President

If elected President of Ghana, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made it clear that his government will do away with the 15% power tax and the emission fee.

The government imposed a number of taxes, including the contentious ones.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did not hold back when he declared his opposition to taxes on emission levies and his intention to abolish them as president in his first major speech to the nation following his election as the NPP flagbearer. During the speech, he also provided broad policy outlines of a Bawumia-led presidency.

‘’There will be no emissions levy under my administration’’, he revealed.

As part of his government’s new tax plan, Dr. Bawumia also declared that he would eliminate the proposed 15% VAT on energy rates and the tax on wagering, provided that they are in place by January 2025.

Additionally, he declared that his administration would establish a flat tax system that would benefit all citizens and businesses, especially small and medium-sized firms (SMEs), and he defined it as friendly.

“My administration will introduce a very simple, citizen and business-friendly flat tax regime. A flat tax of a percentage of income for individuals and SMEs, which constitute 98% of all businesses in Ghana, with appropriate exemption thresholds set to protect the poor,” Dr. Bawumia indicated.
