Akufo-Addo Sacks GES Director-General

Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa has been fired by President Akufo-Addo from his position as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.

His services were no longer required, according to a letter from the Presidency dated Monday, October 17 and signed by Nana Bediatuo Asante, Secretary to the President.

“The Ministry of Education has informed this Office (of President) that the exigencies that required your skills and expertise as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service do not exist any longer”.

“Accordingly, the President of the Republic has instructed that your secondment be terminated forthwith, and you are directed to return to your position at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology” the letter stated.

Initially appointed in April 2017 as Director-General (DG) of the GES on secondment from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof Opoku-Amankwa was in this position since.

In June 2021, his contract was once more extended.

However, according to the dismissal letter, “the extension of your (GES Boss) secondment by the 14th June, 2021 letter is in contravention of the Human Resource Policy Framework and Manual of the Public Services Commission, as it purports to extend your secondment beyond the 3-year maximum limit”
