Akosombo Dam spillage: Avoid drinking water from affected areas – GHS warns

The victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage will not be able to access water from local sources for the next six months, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has warned.

The warning is in response to the fact that E. coli and fecal bacteria have contaminated water sources, making the water unfit for human consumption.

The information was disclosed on Wednesday at a news conference regarding the flood crisis, when Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, the Director of Public Health, spoke about the vital topic of water safety in areas affected by floods.

Akosombo Dam spillage: Avoid drinking water from affected areas – GHS warns

Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe stated, “VRA and other partners have helped to get access to potable water, but how safe is the water? In the next six months, that is what we are going to focus on. We cannot drink the water now.”

Recognizing the urgent need for alternate sources of water, Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe advised flood victims to use aqua tabs to purify water before drinking.

It is believed that taking this precaution is necessary to protect the health of people impacted by the flooding.

In order to guarantee that these important rules are widely followed, Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe asked flood victims to follow the water consumption limitations till further notice.
