Afenyo-Markin tipped to become new leader as reshuffle looms in Majority Caucus

Significant changes to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) leadership bench in Parliament are anticipated, according information from a news source that supports the government.

According to the Daily Guide, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will meet on Monday to finalize changes to the Majority Caucus leadership after consulting with the party leadership.

The cabinet shuffle, which follows the ministerial changes on February 14, 2024, will be the second significant reorganization of the government.

According to the Daily Guide newspaper, more appointments and changes are expected within the Majority Caucus in Parliament as the reshuffle progresses, with Alexander Afenyo-Markin most likely to be named Majority Leader.

It’s important to remember that, should he be confirmed as the next leader, he will, following screening, immediately take over as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, a job that is currently held by Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader.

It was previously reported that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who is leaving Parliament after nearly three decades, will be moving to the foreign affairs ministry to take Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey’s place as she runs for the position of Commonwealth Secretary-General.

However, Ayorkor Botchwey kept her job, and it’s unclear what portfolio Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will receive at this time. There are rumors that he would lead Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign.

Notably, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip at the moment, has been nominated for the position of Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, implying that she will be replaced at the front benches.
