7 Ashanti Regional MPs have been guaranteed a vice presidential position by Bawumia – Ken Agyapong alleges

Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Kennedy Agyapong has responded to Alan Kyerematen’s recent departure as an NPP member and his plan to run for office as an independent in the 2024 elections.

On September 24, 2023, he voiced his concerns about the internal politics that frequently resulted in rising violence during an interview with US-based Kings Radio.

He bemoaned the rising prevalence of violence during party elections, pointing out that some NPP members get more violent during these competitions.

Seven Ashanti Regional MPs, according to the member of parliament for Assin Central, were allegedly promised the vice presidential position by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, another candidate for the position of flagbearer.

If Bawumia were to become the party’s flag bearer, the NPP would probably face opposition. He stressed his intention to oppose any moves that would force the NPP into opposition as he maintained that the party should steer clear of such a scenario.

He continued, “What they are doing in the Ashanti region, 47 MPs have been intimidated, all because of one vice president position. They have promised 7 of the Ashanti regional MPs for the vice president’s slots, and they are pushing everybody because they want the vice president position.”

He added: “One vice president, 17 people are contesting for the slot and because of that they have been blinded, they know they will lose, because how can the vice president beat Mahama?

“It is not possible upon all his utterances. Yet, because of greed and selfishness they want us to go into opposition and I will resist that, I won’t allow us go into opposition.”

Kennedy will compete for the position of flagbearer alongside Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The NPP has set November 4, 2023, as the date to choose a new party leader to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
