The Greater Accra area’s fishermen in Ada, in the Ada East District, are living in terror after two fishing canoes and three crew members vanished following a fishing excursion.
According to sources, the crew members departed on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. On Thursday morning when they were returning from their adventure, their boats overturned as they attempted to enter the Volta River close to the estuary.
As of 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, seven of the 19 fisherman who were engaged in the accident were still unaccounted for.
Ebenezer Teye Kisseh Nartey, the Ada East District NADMO Coordinator, who confirmed the event, said they received a distress call regarding a two-canoe accident at 7 a.m. on Thursday.
Ten of the eleven fishermen on board one of the canoes named “Shalom” were located and saved, according to Mr. Nartey, while two of the crew of eight on board another boat named “Barcelona” were discovered in a hamlet in the Volta area.
He said there are still six missing fishermen from the second canoe.
The first canoe had been recovered but was severely damaged, according to the NADMO Coordinator, while the second boat and its fishing equipment had not been located.
According to Mr. Nartey, NADMO and the Ghana Navy are working together to conduct a search and rescue operation for the missing fishermen.
