Many believe that scoring a penalty is not that hard but that is not the case considering that there is huge pressure on the player to takes the spot-kick. A number of players are brilliant from the spot and here we take a look at the five players who have scored the most penalties in the 21st century.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo – 121
It comes as no surprise that Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list considering that he has arguably become one of the best in the business when it comes to scoring from the spot. The 35-year-old has netted a staggering 121 penalties so far in the time period and there is no doubt that he will add to his tally next season.
2. Francesco Totti – 75
The Roma icon who retired from competitive football in 2017 scored 75 penalties during his career in the 21st century and was generally known to be a safe bet when it came to scoring from the spot especially in high pressure situations. A true footballing legend!
3. Lionel Messi – 75
While Lionel Messi has scored a lot of goals from the penalty spot, his conversion rate is not the best as the record six-time Ballon d’Or winner does not look very comfortable when it comes to taking spot-kicks. However, the 33-year-old has improved when it comes to penalty kicks in recent times and will no doubt move up this list in the near future.
4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 64
Another modern great who makes the list is the evergreen Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Super Swede has netted 64 penalties so far in the 21st century and despite being 38, he does not look like he will stop scoring anytime soon.
5. Frank Lampard – 50
The current Chelsea manager was another player who was brilliant from the spot and he was a regular penalty taker for the Blues during his career. Lampard unfortunately cannot add further to his tally and might move down the list as time passes.
