2023 AFCON: Richard Ofori explains ‘infamous’ error that kicked Ghana out of the tournament

The Richard Ofori goalkeeping error that led to the corner kick that scored Mozambique’s second goal in the final seconds of their Group B match against the Black Stars of Ghana on Monday, January 22, 2024, is one incident from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations that Ghanaians will never forget.

Ghanaians will always remember that video of Ofori botch up what should have been simple goalkeeping maneuvers.

Many Ghanaians harshly criticized Ofori following the game, with some supporters demanding that he be permanently dropped from the national team.

However, Maxwell Nana Essien of Pure FM, situated in Kumasi, has shed some light on the situation surrounding Ofori’s regrettable error.

2023 AFCON: Richard Ofori explains ‘infamous’ error that kicked Ghana out of the tournament

Nana Essien alleges that Richard Ofori provided him with information regarding the incident while he was a teammate at Wa All Stars with Maxwell Baako, a former Asante Kotoko player.

Baako stated that Ofori placed the responsibility on the Alassane Ouattara Stadium’s potato-like pitch, where the game was played.

“He has spoken to Maxwell Baako. They were teammates at Wa All Stars to they still have a good relationship. According to Baako, Ofori told him that the pitch was not good so the ball was often bouncing.

“He felt the ball came from one Ghanaian player so he wanted to catch it and prevent a corner kick. He was beckoned by some of the players to leave but before he could pull out, the ball bounced on the pitch and scraped his hands resulting in a corner kick. It was not deliberate,” he said.

The Black Stars finished the 2023 AFCON having played three games in Group B, winning none, drawing two, and losing one.

The first group encounter ended in a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, while the second and last group matches ended in 2-2 draws with Egypt and Mozambique, respectively.

The Black Stars exited the AFCON group stage twice, with just two points and a goal deficit. They had already experienced this same fate in the 2021 competition.

The Ghana Football Association fired Chris Hughton following the dismal performance against Ivory Coast.
